Half a World Away; the Irish in Korea 1871 to Today

Event Details

This November The Irish Association of Korea will host "Half a world away". This event will outline the influence some Irish have had on the Korean Peninsula. The event will also remember the brave people who fought and lost their lives in the Korean war. All are welcome but places are limited.

The day will begin with a breakfast at 10 am in the Hamilton hotel (179 Itwaeon-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul subway line 6, Itaewon station exit 1 & 2). In the Hamilton hotel in the Cosmos hall on the 3rd floor, the event will be opened by the Irish Ambassador to Korea Aingeal O’Donoghue, and a brief presentation on the Irish Association of Korea by the IAK chairman Andrew Kilbride. Following this will be the first of two talks beginning with Dr. Kevin O’Rourke. Dr. O’Rourke is a writer and scholar and has been a resident in Korea since the 1960’s who will give a talk on The first Irish in Korea and the history and contribution of the Irish people over the years, and whose most recent book is 'William George Aston in Korea'. This is an account of the life and work of the first Irish person to live in Korea. This will be followed by a talk and a presentation by James Durney; an Irish author who has written two books on the Irish in the Korean War.

The day event talks, breakfast, tour guides and bus only costs 10,000 won!

From the Hamilton hotel there be buses provided with visits guided by authors Andrew Salmon and James Durney. Visiting the “Memorial of the Irish dead of the Korean War,” along with a visit to the some of the famous places where Irishmen fought and died in the Korean War.
Buses will return to Seoul at approximately 7-8pm.

The day event will be followed by an exciting music event at the Rocky Mountain Tavern pub in Itaewon from 8pm on. This night event will be a fundraiser for the Irish Association of Korea. For those who wish to attend just the night event, the entrance fee will be 10,000 won. Those who paid already for the day event can enter this night event for free.
