As darkness falls over Hahoe Village, 1,000 to 1,500 charcoal bags ignite along five ropes spanning 250 metres above the river. Sparks rain down in cascading rivers of light. From the 70-metre Buyongdae cliff, pine torches are hurled into the night — flames growing as they fall, exploding on impact with the rocks below.
