Description
South and North Korea have drawn an armistice line across the Korean Peninsula, from the mouth of the Imjin River in the east to the city of Goseong in the west. On each side of this line lies a 2-km demilitarized zone where all military activity is prohibited. Protected from human intervention for about six decades, this area has become a true refuge for wildlife.
The third tunnel is the third structure of this type built by North Korea with the aim of invading South Korea. It was discovered in 1978. Of the four tunnels identified to date, it is the closest to Seoul (about 52 km). It is 1.6 kilometers long and 2 meters wide, and it is estimated that about 30,000 soldiers could pass through it in an hour. A visit to the third tunnel requires prior booking.
