I grew up in these alleys, long before Bukchon became one of Seoul's most photographed neighborhoods.
To walk through Bukchon is to walk toward the roots of Korean history and culture — where the questions travelers carry about Korea begin to find their answers.
From 1392 to the 1980s, this neighborhood sat at the center of Korean political and cultural life. And it hasn't stopped shaping how the world sees Korea: Bukchon's hanok rooflines recently appeared as a backdrop in KPop Demon Hunters.
Since February 2025, those who wanted to know Korea more deeply have walked these alleys. Your guide is a Bukchon native, filmmaker, and screenwriting professor, weaving personal history into six centuries of Korean history.
How the walk unfolds:
First 30 min — Where a small palace once stood: We start at Anguk Station Exit 4, where a small palace once stood — and where the logic of Korean pungsu-jiri (geomancy) first shaped this neighborhood.
Next 30 min — The architect who shaped a city: The life and legacy of one of Korea's greatest architects, seen through the buildings he left behind — and how a real Joseon-era yangban (aristocrat) actually lived.
Next 30 min — 150 years of everyday life: A look into daily life in Bukchon during the 1970s and '80s, and the history this neighborhood carries — traced through a well that's stood here for over 150 years. Along the way, you'll meet a house where the same family has run its trade for five generations.
Final 30 min — The view everyone recognizes now: Bukchon's most iconic vista — the same rooftops that appeared in KPop Demon Hunters — and the story of why Korea's wealthiest conglomerate families chose to live here.
