Description
Step into the world of Korean traditional folk painting (minhwa) with a silk fan painting experience at the Gamseong Folk Painting Institute. Led by jinchaehwa artist Lee Hwa, this hands-on workshop shares her special know-how for capturing the beauty of traditional Korean painting on a silk fan (biedanbuchae).
Lee Hwa holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts from the Graduate School of Hansung University and is a full member of the Korean Association of Jinchaehwa (Traditional Korean Color Painting). She illustrated the picture book 'The Joyous Royal Procession of King Jeongjo, 1795,' bringing to life the historic 1795 procession through vivid, historically grounded imagery.
Learn the foundational principles of minhwa, including layered coloring (baechae) and the use of authentic mineral and shell-based pigments such as hobun (white shell powder) and yeonji-bongchae (rouge red). From the secrets of mixing color to the precise angle of every brushstroke, Lee Hwa personally guides you through the exact points beginners tend to find most difficult.
Gain insight into the cultural symbolism behind classic motifs like peonies and lotus blossoms, along with the historical role of fans in Joseon-era daily life and court ceremony. By the end of the session, create your own one-of-a-kind silk fan—a wearable piece of art, a thoughtful gift, or a cherished keepsake of your creative journey into Korean traditional culture.
