Description

[Why This Experience] Most travelers visit Korea's palaces, markets, and museums — but leave without understanding the meaning behind what they saw. The colors, the patterns, the crafts, the food — they all carry stories that aren't written on any sign. This 90-minute experience is designed to change that. Before you explore Seoul, join us at Wayujae in Samcheong-dong, steps from Gyeongbokgung Palace. We give you the cultural lens that makes everything click — so when you walk through a palace later, you'll know why the pillars are painted in five colors, what the lotus pattern means, and why a moon jar is considered the height of Korean beauty. This program was designed by JJ, who spent 10 years in the travel industry before opening Wayujae. He knows exactly what travelers are curious about — so every story is told from a traveler's perspective, in easy and engaging English. Think of it as the orientation Seoul never gave you. [What You'll Discover] Clothing — The five cardinal colors behind hanbok, and the meaning of saekdong patterns. Architecture — Why hanok pillars are painted with dancheong, and the symbolism hidden in temple patterns. Hangul — How King Sejong designed the Korean alphabet in 1443 so scientifically that beginners can read it in hours. Hanji — Korean paper said to last a thousand years, once layered into armor that arrows couldn't pierce. Folk Painting (Minhwa) — How to read the wishes hidden in tigers, peonies, and butterflies. Ceramics — Goryeo celadon, white porcelain 'white gold,' and the moon jar loved by RM of BTS. Crafts — Lacquerware, mother-of-pearl, and Yugi brassware found almost nowhere else. [Tasting Experience] After the stories, enjoy a tea ceremony seated on a traditional Korean stool. Taste around 10 types of traditional Korean snacks — including kimbugak (seaweed chips), rice cakes, honey, Gaeseong Yakgwa, and gangjeong — paired with one of 6 handcrafted seasonal teas you choose yourself. You'll learn about ginseng, yuja, and seaweed along the way. Everything on the table, including the food, is available in Wayujae. [Good to Know] Small group experience, maximum 6 guests — intimate and conversation-based, not a lecture. Located at 108 Samcheong-ro, Wayujae is Seoul's only informative souvenir select shop, steps from Gyeongbokgung Palace.
