The larger Gyeongbokgung Palace is a BIG place to walk around but if you wish to see something small-scale then Deoksugung Palace is a great alternative as it is also closer to the subway...

Admission to the museum is free once you've paid your entrance into Deoksugung Palace.
Combine your visit to the museum with a walk around the palace grounds. There is a even a free guide service in English: 10.30am (Tuesday to Friday), 1.40pm (Saturday, Sunday)
The Royal Guard-Changing Ceremony is a highly recommended event. It is held three times a day in front of Daehanmun Gate at Deoksugung Palace from 10:30am to 11:00am in the morning, from 14:00 to 14:30 and from 15:00 to 15:30 in the afternoon. No ceremonies on Mondays.
