Leeum Samsung Museum of Art is an aesthetic repository of art and culture. An interesting blend of traditional Korean artwork and contemporary, modern art by Korean and Foreign artists.
Uniquely located in Hannam-dong, Itaewon, on the slope of Namsan Mountain and beautifully overlooking the Han River, Leeum Museum of Art is a nexus of culture, architecture and nature. The complex was built in 2004 with the purpose of preserving and exhibit Korean cultural heritage.
The museum itself has two main buildings: Museum 1, designed by Mario Botta (famous Swiss architect), is dedicated to traditional Korean artwork. Museum 2, designed by Jean Nouvel (a famous French architect), is showcasing contemporary, modern art by Korean and foreign artists. Both buildings are architecturally gorgeous. There is a third building which has a rotating exhibit showing works from many famous artists. The entire museum space creates a dynamic relationship between the building, the site and the city, so make sure you take the time to enjoy the outside as well as the inside.
