Part museum, part cafe and part designer furniture showroom, this five-story loft space in the vibrant, young and hip Hongdae neighborhood boasts everything from the timeless Scandinavian designs to the legendary Bauhaus, mixing vintage with contemporary designs. Every piece of décor boasts designer furniture from the 19th-century French doors and antique London lamp-posts to the Scandinavian Designer chairs.

The lower-case 'a' in their logo: 'aA' stands for art, architecture, and alive, while the capital 'A' is; "an unchangeable value, the best a person can get".

The venue is owned by the famous vintage furniture collector Myung-Hwan Kim, who also happens to own one of the most famous Italian restaurants in Hongdae, 'AGIO'.

The coexistence of classic and modern art in the 'Cafe aA' is due to his 20 years of collecting vintage furniture and ornaments from around the world, and that is why they have so many different styles of tables and chairs.

Among all the unique ornaments in the cafe, what stands out most to me are the mirror balls in the middle of the hall - created by Tunisian designer Tom Dixon, who is also the art director of one of the most well known furniture makers; 'Habitat'.

For those interested, sales can be arranged for certain pieces of furniture and ornaments.

Our advice? Visit the trendy café on the ground floor and pair the organic Korean plum ice tea with the BokBunJa - a raspberry dessert in a glass filled with ice and topped with vanilla ice cream.
